British actor Ian Holm has died at the age of 88, in line with a release from his agent.
Holm had an extended and varied acting career that saw him cast as a slew of characters, including Bilbo Baggins within the "Lord of the Rings" movie trilogy, Ash in Ridley Scott's "Alien" and athletics coach Sam Mussabini within the 1981 movie "Chariots of hearth," a performance that he was nominated for an Oscar.
Born in Essex, southeast England, in 1931, Holm attended the RADA drama school in London.

British actor Ian Holm has diedAfter forging a successful career on the stage, he moved into television and later movie acting.
Holm also played Father Vito Cornelius in "The Fifth Element" (1997) and Professor Fitz in "The Aviator" (2004).
In 1989, he was named Commander of country Empire (CBE) and in 1998 he was knighted for services to drama.
Holm died peacefully in hospital Friday morning after a Parkinson's-related illness, along with his family and carer at his bedside, his agent, Alex Irwin, said.
However, his stage career was decrease after he developed acute fearfulness during a production of The Iceman Cometh in 1976.
He went on to work primarily in film, thanks to roles in such high-profile movies because the Fifth Element and also the Lord of the Rings series.
It was 1981's Chariots of hearth that saw him receive his best supporting actor Oscar nomination.
The same film won him a Bafta, as did his supporting performance within the flak in 1968.
Sir Ian played Bilbo in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, having played Frodo Baggins for BBC radio in 1981.
Diminutive in stature, he was similarly well-cast as Pod in 1992 children's series The Borrowers.
"I'm never the identical twice," he told the la Times in 2000, "and I'm not a movie star-type, so people don't demand that I'm always the identical."
He received a knighthood in 1998 for his contribution to drama following the CBE he received in 1989.

"His portrayal of Bilbo Baggins within the Hobbit and so the Lord Of The Rings trilogies ensured the magic of his craft can be shared by all generations," Irwin said during a press release.
"He was a genius of stage and screen, winning multiple awards, and loved by directors, audiences and his colleagues alike. His sparkling wit always accompanied a mischievous twinkle in his eye.
"Charming, kind and ferociously talented, we are visiting miss him hugely."
Holm's death sparked a wave of tributes online.
The British Academy of Film and television Arts (BAFTA) tweeted its respects.Ian Holm
